What Does an Architect Do?
An architect designs and plans all aspects of building work. This might be designing a new building from scratch, restoring an old building or adding something on to an existing building.
Initially, an architect will discuss the clients needs, discovering what they want their building to be, how they want it to look and what the buildings function will be and what their budget is. They will then design the look of the building using paper or 3D modelling software. They might create a model of the building, and they will certainly draw up the blueprints.
The Architect isn't just responsible for the way the building looks. They plan the measurements, decide on the materials that will be used and ensure that the building meets all of the necessary health and safety legislation. They will then oversee the project from start to finish.
Sometimes, if you work for a big company, you might only be involved in one aspect of the design process as they have teams who will work on the initial conception and design, separate teams to design the blueprints and so on throughout the process.
Being an Architect can also provide plenty of opportunities to spend time away from home visiting building sites and meeting with clients. The job can involve a lot of travel but this is not always the case.

How Much Can an Architect Earn?
At the start of their career, an Architect is likely to earn around the £20,000 mark. With experience this can increase to anywhere between £30,000 - £45,000 depending on skills.
