GP Referral training courses allow personal trainers and gym instructors to safely and effectively manage patients who have been set to a gym, health club or leisure centre at the suggestion of their doctor, typically because the GP feels that regular exercise will reduce the symptoms felt by the patient. There are a number of illnesses and conditions that regular exercise can help, including osteoporosis, coronary heart disease (CHD), chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, mental health obesity, lower back pain and arthritis, as well as cancer recovery
Studying for a GP Referral qualification allows personal trainers and other fitness professionals to learn how to design programmes and prescribe exercise safely for looking to improve their heaalth whilst not risking any further degenerative effects. Becoming GP Referral qualified, course dependent, also allows personal trainers to step up on to Level 4 with the Register of Exercise Professionals.
GP Referral training course content
Because the vast array of possible ailments and illnesses covered within GP referral, personal trainers and fitness professionals can either participate in a general GP Referral training course or specialise on certain conditions, including:
- Cancer rehabilitation
- Lower pain pain
- Mental health
- Exercise and the ageing
- Falls prevention
- Cardiac diseases
- Obesity and diabetes
- Stroke
Typically a more general GP Referral course will cover topics including:
- Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia
- Obesity and diabetes
- Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Back pain
- Mental health
As you will have no doubt noticed there is a cross over of subject matter, but the general course will not delve as deeply into each topic as much as the dedicated courses. That said, it could be argued that a general GP Referral course has its advantages, allowing course graduates to deal with a wider breadth.
