About this course

If polled, the average person would say they are able to recognize abnormal behavior when they see it. The behavior might be assessed quickly as odd, strange, or sick. Being able to assess whether a person's behavior is abnormal or not and whether their behavior presents a danger to the individual or to others is a goal of all practicing psychologists, regardless of their theoretical orientation. This course will provide an overview of abnormal psychology, including how abnormal psychology has been approached and treated throughout history, how different theoretical orientations assess and treat abnormal behaviors, and how the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(5th edition), or DSM-V, classifies abnormal behavior.
