What Does a Gas Engineer Do?

A gas engineer will usually attend the homes of customers or businesses and install, repair or service gas appliances.  This will also involve driving and so you will usually need to have a full and clean driving license.

As a gas engineer, your day to day duties will usually involve driving to the customer's premises and fixing equipment, installing new equipment, finding gas leaks, providing cost estimates, ordering new parts, keeping a record of the work you have completed, advising customers on topics such as gas safety and energy efficiency and selling additional products and services.

Your working hours are likely to be between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.  It is also possible that you will be expected to be on call for emergencies as part of a rota system.

Is Becoming a Gas Engineer Right For Me?

To become a gas engineer, the following skills and attributes are required:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Good practical skills
  • The ability to work alone
  • Awareness of health, safety and industry regulations
  • Basic IT skills
  • Good maths skills

How Much Can a Gas Engineer Earn?

As an apprentice, British Gas pay £15,000 a year.  Once fully qualified you can earn between £25,000 and £30,000 per annum.

What Qualifications Do I Need To Become a Gas Engineer?

To become a gas engineer you will usually train as an apprentice and complete industry recognised qualifications such as a Level 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating (Gas Fired Water and Central Heating Appliances) or Level 3 (NVQ) in Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance.
