What Does a Bookkeeper Do?

A bookkeeper works for business' to keep a record of all of their financial transactions.  These would include all purchases, the payment of wages and all money received from sales of a product or service.

The working hours of a bookkeeper will usually be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday if you work for a company, however, being a bookkeeper provides an opportunity to become self-employed and therefore be far more flexible in your working hours.

A typical day for a bookkeeper might include receiving and processing invoices, calculating profit and loss and managing ledgers.  The role is entirely office based.

To become a bookkeeper you will need the following skills and attributes:

  • Attention to detail.
  • A natural flair with numbers.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.

How Much Can a Bookkeeper Earn?

On average, a bookkeeper will earn between £20,000 and £24,000 a year.

What Qualifications Do I Need To Become a Bookkeeper?

For an entry level position, there are no qualifications required, however, you will need to have knowledge of specific software and standard bookkeeping practices.  Most colleges will run basic courses on bookkeeping that you would be able to take.
