What Does a Concierge Do?
As a concierge, you would usually word in a hotel or corporate building. You would work as the front of house and be the first point of contact for all guests and visitors to the premises. As a concierge, it is important to be welcoming, friendly and create a fantastic first impression.
While working as a concierge you primary duty is to welcome guests to the hotel or building and direct them to the reception area. You will assist with luggage and bags, direct visitors to the different parts of the building and deal with customer requests.
On top of this, you must also ensure you are familiar with regular clients, aware of the day to day running of the hotel and any specific functions or events that are occurring, have a good knowledge of the local area so you can provide up to date information to guests and make dinner reservations, acquire tickets for events or book taxis.
Being a concierge is a busy and fast paced job that can be required to work all hours of the day or night, all year round, depending on who you are working for.
Is Becoming a Concierge Right For Me?
To become a concierge you will need the following skills:
- The ability to multi-task; you will have numerous customers making various requests, often at exactly the same time.
- A love of customer service; if you don't have a genuine interest in being helpful to people, being a concierge isn't for you.
- A certain level of fitness; Being a concierge is an active job that can require a lot of walking and lifting heavy luggage.
- An in-depth knowledge of the local area.
- Excellent communication skills.
How Much Can a Concierge Earn?
A concierge can, in general, earn anywhere between £14,000 to £25,000 per year.
What Qualifications Do I Need To Become a Concierge?
There are no qualifications required to become a concierge. Employers will look for a person who is articulate, smart looking and has a good knowledge of the local area. Completing a course such as an NVQ in hospitality will increase your prospects of acquiring the job.
